Which Way?

The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing.
-- 1 Corinthians 1:18

Read: 1 Corinthians 1: 18-31
  • Genesis 41-42
  • Matthew 12: 1-23

Every night, Howard and Mel frequented the cheap bars in Grand Rapids, Michigan, hoping to drown away another miserable day. Finally, the pain of wasted life was too much, so Mel hopped a train for Chicago, where he hoped to end it all.

But as he walked barefoot through a Chicago snowstorm in 1897, heading for a self-imposed demise in Lake Michigan, he was stopped by a worker from the Pacific Garden Mission. Mel went inside, heard the gospel, and accepted Christ as his Savior.

Later, Mel went back to Grand Rapids to start a mission. Howard heard that he was saved and sober. But instead of trusting Jesus, Howard just laughed at "Old Mel." To him, "the message of the cross [was] foolishness" (1 Cor. 1:18). Finally, the drinking took its toll on Howard, and he committed suicide.

More than 100 years later, the Mel Trotter Mission still welcomes people who need a place to stay and who need Jesus. And 100 years later, our family is still saddened by Howard's demise. He was my wife's grandfather.

Like Mel and Howard, we have a choice. "He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him" (John 3:36). What do you choose? --Dave Branson

Which way will you take? The question is clear -- the choice you must make
with a heart sincere; To Jesus the Lord you now are inclined -- Today is the day to make up your mind. -- Hess

To choose Christ now is a choice for eternity.

Look It Up

How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
--Genesis 39:9
Read: Genesis 39:1-12
  • Genesis 39-40
  • Matthew 11
Some online dictionaries report each year on what words were looked up the most on their site. for 2005, some of the most popular words were refugee, pandemic, tsunami, and levee. because of worldwide catastrophic events that year, we can readily understand why those words were checked.

The most popular lookup for the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary that year was the word integrity. The definition given is: "firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values." It's use to describe those who are unwilling to be bribed or morally corrupted. Why was that word on the top of the list? Could it be because integrity is so lacking that many don't know what it looks like in someone's life?

In His Word, God gave us an example of integrity in the life of Joseph. Potiphar had put him in charge of overseeing "his house and all that he had" )Gen. 39:5). When he was propositioned by his master's wife, Joseph refused, saying, "How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?" (v.9). He knew what God's standards were, and he chose to stand for the right -- at the cost of his freedom.

Integrity -- look it up in Genesis 39. Then live it out in God's strength. -- Anne Cetas

When willingly you keep your promise true, To live for Christ, the One who
died for you, Your words and actions are for all to see -- they speak aloud of
your integrity. -- Hess

No legacy is rich as integrity.

Let Freedom Ring

Is this not the fast that i have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness,...
to let the oppressed go free?
--Isaiah 58:6

Read: Isaiah 58:1-12
  • Genesis 36-38
  • Matthew 10:21-42
In 1963, during a peaceful march on Washington, DC, Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his now famous "I have a Dream" speech. He eloquently called for freedom to ring from every mountaintop across the nation. the cost to him personally and to those who joined his peaceful resistance movement was steep, but real change soon began. God used that speech to awaken the conscience of the US to fight for the freedom of the oppressed and downtrodden.
In  the 8th century B.C., amid personal and national injustice, the prophet Isaiah was used by God to awaken the conscience of His people. their convenient spirituality had led them to violence and insensitivity toward their fellow humans. God's people were oppressing the poor and substituting religious practices for genuine righteous living (vv. 1-5). God indicted them (v.1) and prescribed spiritual living that would be expressed through turning to God in genuine repentance and setting people free (vv. 6-12).
Like Isaiah, we have been sent to let freedom ring. By the power of the Holy Spirit, we must proclaim that the captives can be released, that the downtrodden can be freed from their oppressors, and that the time of the Lord's favor has come. --Marvin Williams

I've got the river of life flowing out of me: Makes the lame to walk and the
blind to see, Opens prison doors, sets the captives free;
I've got a river of life flowing out of me. --Casebolt

No righteousness, no freedom!

“Insecticidal Effects of Madre de Cacao (Gliricidia Sepium) In the Control of Farm Insects”

Madre de Cacao is nitrogen-fixing tree. In some areas, it is referred to as a quick-stick due to the characteristic of growing almost right away just by cutting it and directly planting it in the ground. It is a fast growing tree with a maturity height of 10 meters (33 feet). It is adaptable to almost any soil environment, including infertile soils. It is tolerant to salt spray and water logging. It can tolerate drought for up to 6 to 8 months. This tree can be potentially weedy, but rarely causes a problem. Its ubiquitous characteristic makes it good alternative for feeds due to its availability in almost at  all areas in the country.

Army worms, cabbage lopper, case worm, tobacco budworm, whorl maggots are examples of farm insects. Insects are the largest single group of animals in the world. About 750, 000 different kinds of insects are known, and more are being discovered every year. Human kind fights a constant battle against harmful insects. We do this in a number of ways.
One of this is by the use of insecticide sprays (An insecticide is a chemical that kills insects.) the use of pesticides allows us to produce more food than ever before on less land.
Pesticides work on a variety of ways. Some pesticides poison the pests and stop basic life processes, such as ability to breathe. Other pesticides the pests from growing normally. Insecticides that are similar to an insect naturally hormones cause the insect to grow abnormally. The insects may never grow into adult, so it would never reproduce.
Pesticides can be classified into natural or chemical. Natural pesticides comes from plant extract, while chemical are often made with sulfur and sometimes kill pests on contact. These chemical pesticides leaves toxic residue to the environment.
A study done by Alfredo Rabena, a full time professor at the University or Northern Philippines in Vigan City, found that Madre de Cacao leaves are good source of coumarins. A toxic substance that can kill almost all types of pests and insects.
Rabena said one kilogram of kakawati leaves, soaked In water overnight can produce seven gallons of “botanopesticides” (botanical pesticides).
“The more leaves, the more concentrated the pesticides he said.
Rabena said he conducted the study in 1996 in collaboration with a Malaysian chemist Dr. Nordin Lajiz at the University of the Philippines in Los BaƱos, Laguna

“The three-year study found botanopesticides are effective pest control.” He said, adding the technology is being used by rice and vegetable farmers in eight municipalities in Ilocos sur.
Rabena said he wants to provide Filipino farmers an alternative to commercial pesticides to lessen the cost of production.
He said the Madre de Cacao plant is endemic to tropical countries such as the Philippines.

Example:

A.      Materials
Madre de Cacao ½ kilo of leaves
Grinder or mortar and pestle
20 liters of Water
Strainer
Pail
B.      Procedure:
1.      Pound and pour the Madre de Cacao leaves
2.      Soak overnight in 20 liters of water in a pail.
3.      With the use of a strainer, strained the solution.
4.      Test samples of farm insects were acquired and divided into two groups, one group is placed inside the box A while the other group in box B.
5.      The solution were sprayed in box A with the use of Madre de Cacao while box B were sprayed with a chemical insecticide.
6.      Observe for 30 mins.
7.      It was being tried with different test samples.

Results and discussion:
Out of 10 insects, the Madre de Cacao leaves only reaches 8, while the commercial insecticide all are affected.

Farm Insects affected
Farm Insects unaffected
Commercial Insecticides

The result of mixing the Madre de Cacao is more safer than a commercial insecticide because it lives toxic residue for human and environment.

The Gift of Grace

By grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God – Ephesians 2:8

Read: Mathew 22:34-39

Genesis 33-35
Mathew 10:1-20

A woman told me that when she was growing up, the kids next door weren’t allowed to play with her because she didn’t go to church. Later, when she became a Christian and told her mother, her mom replied, “You’re not going to start acting like you’re better than all of us, are you?” That mom got the wrong impression of Christians from her neighbors.

It’s good to be vigilant about the influences in our children’s lives, but not at the expense of sharing God’s love with our neighbors. Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:14-16 remind us: “You are the light of the world… Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

We may feel a tension between living a holy, “separate” life (2 Cor. 6:17) and the great commandment to love our neighbor as much as ourselves (Matt. 22:39). But these two concepts don’t really conflict. A central part of life of obedience to God is to show concern and love for the lost.

Since we did nothing to deserve salvation, we have nothing to boast of. Paul wrote, “By grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Eph. 2:8-9).

Share this gift of grace with others! – Cindy Hess Kasper

I do not ask for mighty words to leave the crowd impressed,
But grant my life may ring so true My neighbor may be blessed.
--Anon.

The best witness for Christ shows God’s grace and share His love.

Have You Started The Journey?

You were made for a close relationship with God. But you may not yet know God in a personal way through His Son.
The Bible says that we have instead chosen to go our own way: “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way” (Isa. 53:6).
Yet the Lord is eager to forgive our sin, restore our fellowship with God, and give us the gift of eternal life. But there are some biblical requirements.
First, we must admit that we are sinners and cannot save ourselves. The Bible tells us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23).
Second, we need to recognize the seriousness of our sin. God sets a standard of perfection in which no one can please Him based on self-effort. “The wages of sin death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 6:23). The good news is that Christ suffered the consequences, making it possible for us to have eternal fellowship with Him. “God demonstrates His own toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8)
Third, we need to receive Jesus as Savior. “As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12)
Are you ready to make that decision? If you are, go to Jesus in prayer now and share with Him you desire to receive forgiveness for sin and to start your journey of a relationship with Him.
